Cliffroy Taylor better known as I-Waynebroke on to the reggae scene in 2004 with the hit single ‘Can’t Satisfy Her’ acontemporary roots anthem rebuking the ‘buyer and the seller’ for their worldlyways. The song played on core and crossover reggae stations across the countryand launched I-Wayne’s unique sound to an international audience. Two VPalbums, 'Lava Ground' (2005) and 'Book of Life' (2007) helped to solidify I-Wayne’sfan base.

Since then, peers including Tarrus Riley, Etana andGyptian, have charted commercial successes with contemporary roots reggae inJamaica and abroad.
And now, I-Wayne returns with these 14 new songs for reggae fanseverywhere.

Israel Vibration Nominated For 2012 Grammy Award!

The Grammy nominees have been revealed and Israel Vibration receives a Best Reggae Album nomination for "Reggae Knights". Other nominees include Monty Alexander for "Harlem-Kingston Express Live!", Stephen Marley for "Revelation Pt 1: The Root Of Life", Ziggy Marley for "Wild And Free" and Shaggy for "Summer In Kingston".
Cecil "Skelly" Spence and Lascelle "Wiss" Bulgin, two thirds of the original Israel Vibration, released "Reggae Knights" on August 16, 2011 through Mediacom and VP Associated Label Group (VPAL), a subsidiary of VP Records that offers worldwide independent digital and physical distribution for artists and labels.

VPAL Label Manager Donovan Williams expresses his enthusiasm about the news: “I'm very excited for their well-deserved nomination. Working directly with Skelly, Wiss and manager Michel Jovanovic on their U.S. release has been a nice experience and served great purpose. We intend to join forces again for their future accomplishments.”

Recorded in Jimmy Cliff's studio (Sun Power Productions) in Kingston, Israel Vibration still defends the traditional values of roots music on "Reggae Knights". They even recreate their famous first single "Bad Intention" which put them on the map as one of the most pivotal reggae bands in the late 1970s. Additional musicians including members of the Roots Radics, Robbie Shakespeare, Dean Fraser, Nambo Robinson and Grammy-winning engineer Christopher Daley contribute their talents on the album.

Israel Vibration was originally a harmony trio consisting of Lascelle "Wiss" Bulgin, Albert "Apple Gabriel" Craig, and Cecil "Skelly." They all met as children while recovering from polio at a rehabilitation center in Jamaica. The boys formed a bond singing together and used music as part of the healing process. The group went on to record three albums, "The Same Song", "Unconquered People" and "Why You So Craven", before temporarily parting ways in 1981. In 1997, Apple Gabriel permanently left the group to pursue a solo career. Skelly and Wiss continue to record albums and tour the world as Israel Vibration, backed by longtime associates Roots Radics.

The winner for Best New Reggae Album will be announced in at the Pre-Telecast Ceremony on Feb, 12, 2012. The 54th Grammys air on CBS on Feb 12, 2012 at 8pm ET.

Joel Chin Murdered in Jamaica

It is with great sadness that VP Records must announce the passing of Joel Chin at the age of 35. Joel was shot last night (Tuesday, August 16) outside his home in Stony Hill, St. Andrew in Jamaica. The cause was not immediately known.

The grandson of VP Records founder Vincent Chin, son of famed Reggae producer Clive Chin and nephew of the owners of VP Records, Chris and Randy Chin, Joel literally grew up in the Reggae business and put his vast knowledge and connections at the service of the music he loved passionately.

Joining the company in the 90s, Joel was instrumental in launching and fostering the careers of international Reggae stars such as Sean Paul, T.O.K., Beres Hammond, Wayne Wonder, Beenie Man, Sizzla, Morgan Heritage, Tarrus Riley and Etana while creating the top Reggae compilations in the world: "Reggae Gold" and "Strictly The Best". Joel was loved by the creative community in Jamaica and around the world, and has a long standing relationship with some of the top producers in the island such as Dean Fraser and Steven "Lenky" Marsden. Joel's signings helped VP Records become the largest Reggae label in the world and bring Reggae into the mainstream music market culminating with Sean Paul's "Dutty Rock" album which sold over 7 million units worldwide.

An accomplished producer, Joel had moved from New York to Jamaica two years ago to spend more time on music production, songwriting and developing rising talents. Joel wrote hit songs for many artists such as Elephant Man and Etana among many others.

Joel is survived by his mother Juliette, his father Clive, his newborn daughter, two brothers, and three sisters.

Funeral service and arrangements to be announced at a later date.

RISTO BENJI – R.I.P.

VP/Greensleeves was sad to learn of the tragic death of Risto Benji this week, another victim of Jamaican’s senseless gun violence. Rising to prominence in the late 80’s, Risto Benji was one of the the youth stars of the then ruling King Jammy’s camp scoring big hits on big rhythms like “Gimme Di Money” on Punanny and “Don’t Pirate It” on Agony. He was a popular entertainer on King Jammy’s sound system, memorably coming to the UK with the crew in ‘88. Risto Benji continued recording throughout the 90’s and had recently returned to the studio, he will be sadly missed by the dancehall fraternity.

The classic hit “Mama Cry” aka “It’s A Wonder” recorded in combination with Beenie Man perhaps says it best:

Gappy Ranks Releases DEBUT ALBUM!

Having started a buzz on the UK music scene as part of the dancehall collective Suncycle and working with the likes of Twista and Lethal B, Greensleeves Recording artist, Gappy Ranks, is set to release his debut solo album, Put The Stereo On, August 24. The album contains 12 original tracks with production provided by the renowned Peckings Crew.

For Put The Stereo On Gappy Ranks set out to pay homage to the foundation that Reggae music built while bringing to the genre a direction he sees as the future of reggae music. The album opens with “Mountain Top,” Gappy’s first track to rise on the UK Reggae charts, followed by “Heaven In Her Eyes,” which remained #1 for 13 weeks on the UK Reggae Charts and introduced him to an international audience.

On the title track and first single, “Put The Stereo On,” Gappy paints a vivid picture of his childhood and the music that influenced him to enter the Reggae scene. He brings the generations together with his rendition of the classic Tenor Saw tune “Pumpkin Belly.”

When recording Put The Stereo On Gappy Ranks was granted access to classic reggae rhythms like the Treasure Isle rhythm featured on “Happiest Day Of My Life." “Thy Shall Love” delivers a powerful sound and uplifting message of loving yourself and others. For the closing track, “Soul Rebel,” Gappy Ranks is accompanied by legendary UK Reggae artist Nereus Joseph.

Born and raised in the inner-city town Harlesden NW10 which is unofficially known as London’s Reggae capital, Gappy Ranks discovered his passion for music at a young age. While attending school, he strengthened his musical skills devoting most of his time to writing. He made his studio debut with the Ruff Cutt band at aged 11 and later joined Stonebridge stars Suncycle Crew. This experience helped him develop his understanding of the music business and the building of his musical repertoire. He has released numerous mix tapes and collaborated with fellow UK artists Kray Twinz, MC Lethal B and US rapper Twista.

Alberto D'Ascola, or Alborosie, returned to San Diego touring behind his album, Escape From Babylon: To the Kingdom of Zion, in Mission Beach last Friday. More than 600 reggae fans came to Sound Wave to hear the Kingston resident perform. The 32-year-old, Sicilian-born, came on stage about 11:15 p.m. giving the impatient fans a lyrical dose of political and social issues plaguing the world.

The success of “Righteous Are The Conquerer” led producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes to reassemble the protagonists at Channel One Studios the following year (1981). “Gunman” served as the follow up album, and was an instant classic. Reggae Rockers Singing Competition

A new singing competition for unsigned singers aged 16 and over from around the world, is being launched to help showcase Jamaican ska, rocksteady and Reggae music of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
It’s called “Reggae Rockers”, and contestants can enter this global competition by uploading their entry to youtube.com/reggaerockersja. They can sing alone, with a partner or use musical instruments.

Between now and next month, judges will select the online contestants who will go through to the preliminary rounds that will be broadcast on radio from May to October. Beginning in May, listeners can vote for their preferred contestant and the finals are to be broadcast on television in October. Grammy award-winning hit maker and producer Sly Dunbar will be one of the judges, however, the audience will make the final decision as to who wins Jamaica’s first vintage reggae music competition.

The contestant with the most votes will win the Reggae Rockers’ crown and an opportunity to remix a vintage tune with one of Jamaica’s legendary music producers. Undoubtedly it will help to showcase new artistes while paying tribute to our musical icons.

If you’re in New York, all roads lead to the world famous S.O.B.’s club in Manhattan tomorrow night (March 3), where the album release for Mavado’s “Mr. Brooks … A Better Tomorrow” will be held. It’s being hosted by HOT-97 radio station and Alliance Entertainment, and the ‘Gully God’ himself will be performing live, alongside his fellow Alliance camp members Bounty Killer and Serani. Flexx and Chase Cross, two long-time friends of Mavado’s and now Alliance camp junior members will also perform. Doors open at 8 p.m.

I found this Dancehall.Mobi foundation dancehall picture feature, brought to you in association with author / photographer - Beth Lesser. The undated photo below of deejay Ranking (Papa) Toyan was taken at Junjo Lawe’s Volcano HQ near Spanish Town Road, where the whole Volcano crew would hang out on a daily basis in the early to mid 1980s. Unfortunately, Toyan was shot and killed in New York, USA circa 1991.

Greensleeves wants a bleeping compromise

As a result of the new “no bleeping, no daggering” guidelines that were recently handed down by the Broadcasting Commission, Jamaica’s radio stations are scrambling to conform and finding that their existing playlists have to be completely revamped in order to comply full. Most are being hit hard by the regulations, with one radio station in particular - ZipFM - estimating that approximately 60% of its regular playlist will now be affected by the new ban. This is a Dancehall.Mobi news update.

Greensleeves reggae label wants government to allow songs with daggering and bleeps for late night broadcast but concedes that, at times, local radio goes too far.
At the same time, it does not expect the ban to hurt these songs popularity.

Greensleeves president, Olivier Chastan, made the suggestion yesterday while speaking to Jamaica Observer news reporter - Steven Jackson. Click here to see full details from the interview.

What was your inspiration when making the tracks featured on the ‘’12” rulers?
Musically mi always like the ghetto style, ya nah. Where did grow inner Jamaica was lil ghetto, so I was just inspired by from what I did see.

How did you come up with the concept of joker smoker?
The ting that did inspire me when writing that tune, is a time I spent in England, me did role with 1 yute that used drive me around, so everyday me used to link up with him, and him always used to beg a spliff or beg me a rizla or even a cigarette, so me just call him a joker smoker.

Are you pleased with the outcome the album?
Yes mi very pleased with the outcome of the album, mi feel say it shows mi as an artist and as a producer. It’s going to well

On your album you worked with likes of Triston Palma, Little John and Bunny Lie Lie, Are you still in touch or work with theses guys?
Yeah man me still friends with dem, and mi still record tune with dem. were planning to do a reunion tour very soon.

What’s your relationship like with Europe and the U.k?
Well I haven’t been over to Europe since 1999, but still have contact with lot friends in England, most notably blacka Dread. In terms of the rest of Europe tings are good, mi av people from all across Europe send me request for mi dub plate dem and send dem out.

How would you describe yourself, to people that are not too familiar with Jah Thomas?
When mi ah produce a song, mi work closely on the concept with artist, mi nah just produce the song and give it to the artist, mi work them on the melody and the versus. I see myself more than just a producer.

What have you got planned for the future?
Recording some new stuff for the midnight rock reunion, and to record some more modern stuff,
