VP/Greensleeves was sad to learn of the tragic death of Risto Benji this week, another victim of Jamaican’s senseless gun violence. Rising to prominence in the late 80’s, Risto Benji was one of the the youth stars of the then ruling King Jammy’s camp scoring big hits on big rhythms like “Gimme Di Money” on Punanny and “Don’t Pirate It” on Agony. He was a popular entertainer on King Jammy’s sound system, memorably coming to the UK with the crew in ‘88. Risto Benji continued recording throughout the 90’s and had recently returned to the studio, he will be sadly missed by the dancehall fraternity.
